A Fashion Program in the Fashion Capital

Pratt takes the city of New York as its urban

offering students a wealth of opportunities to gain crucial experience beyond the classroom environment. Museums, archives, and design studios familiarize students with design processes and histories; internships at top design companies such as Zero Maria Cornejo, Rag & Bone, Ralph Lauren, and Donna Karan offer hands-on experience and professional networking. All Pratt fashion students participate in annual design competitions sponsored by the CFDA and YMA FSF; competitions sponsored by companies such as Cotton Incorporated and Supima Cotton are integrated into the curriculum, providing avenues for scholarship support and exposure within the fashion community. Public critiques with faculty, peers, and outside design authorities help students crystallize and articulate their design visions. A mandate to show work publicly—in gallery environments, on the street, in showrooms—instills appreciation for the true spectacle of fashion.
The Fashion faculty is comprised of professional practitioners from across the industry, including directors at top design houses, historians, curators, and craftspeople. Some have worked for Donna Karan, Giorgio di Sant’ Angelo, Nike, Liz Claiborne, Fole & Corinna, Ralph Lauren, and Geoffrey Beene; some have built their own companies such as Study-NY, to promote modern sustainable fashion, millinery, and more. Their work has been featured in a wide range of publications including the New York TimesEssence magazine, The Fader, and The New Yorker. Seen on stage and screen at the Metropolitan Opera, on Broadway, and on Bravo TV, faculty work has also sold in Barney’s New York, Henri Bendel, Saks Fifth Avenue, and countless independent retailers.
Guest practitioners from all fashion backgrounds join faculty in the classroom as visiting lecturers, advisors, and critics. Each semester, a full roster of fashion experts is invited to talk theory and practice with Pratt students.

Handbag company lifts Pakistani women from poverty
Women-Rose-Handbag

Popinjay is a high-end handbag company that attracts customers with lush leather and hand-embroidered silk. The designs draw inspiration from Mughal screens, Turkish tiles and Jerusalem's Dome of the Rock. But the Pakistani women who embroider them were once deeply impoverished.

Explore the many advantages of Wallonia.

The company's mission -- producing fair-wage jobs for these women -- smacks of social consciousness, but wasn't enough to compete in the $9 billion handbag market.
About a year ago, when Popinjay was operating as the nonprofit BLISS, it teetered on the brink of collapse.
MIT-educated founder Saba Gul had left a six-figure engineering job to launch the nonprofit and create an alternative for Pakistani girls often forced to leave school young and work for a pittance. For Gul, who is Pakistani, it was too sharp a contrast to her own life.
In March 2011, with about $20,000 in personal savings and $9,000 in Indiegogo funds, Gul launched BLISS, which offered a living wage to 40 uneducated Punjabi women who otherwise survived on about $2 a day.
It was personally fulfilling work for Gul, but by the third quarter of 2012, progress slowed. The venture was unable to launch a new collection, and sales channels were limited. By the fourth quarter, sales stagnated.
"I think we were two weeks, maybe three weeks, from running out of money," says Gul.
Since BLISS worked directly with the underprivileged, a nonprofit formulation had seemed natural to Gul. But it came with unforeseen complications.
"I heavily underestimated the frustrations of raising nonprofit money," says Gul. She had a fast-paced, start-up mentality but faced funding cycles that were a year or two long.
Worse, Gul had a difficult time attracting the right team. As a nonprofit, BLISS was unable to convince top-tier professionals to join the early-stage venture at a low pay scale, because equity couldn't be part of the package.
In January 2013, Gul began rebranding BLISS as the for-profit Popinjay. Production shifted from Attock to Hafizabad, which had high female unemployment and was closer to Popinjay's Lahore office. It was an identity shift for Gul as well as the company.
To salvage the venture, she "went from reading reports on education in Pakistan to reading fashion editorials."
The bags took a posh turn with trendy designs and improved quality: finer leather, top-quality hardware and silk instead of cotton. That meant retraining the artisans and tapping high-end suppliers, but it gave Popinjay access to retailers with much larger sales volumes.
Gul did her own financials for BLISS, but Popinjay took it to a whole new level. She learned to build reports for investors and walked into board rooms "knowing every cell of Excel spreadsheets and financial projections." For the company's first round of funding, Gul negotiated the terms herself, nearly halving investors' high-end hopes for equity and raising $265,000.
Gul says those investors "bring the right amount of pressure to deliver." Because they have a personal stake in the company, their networks became her network. Within ten days of shaking hands, one investor connected Gul with what she considers the best tannery in Pakistan.
She's also been able to hire staff suitable for a fashion label. Rather than international development professionals, Gul's staff manages production, marketing, sales and product design.
Popinjay officially launched with its first line in October 2013, and in seven weeks of sales, the company's revenue was equal to an entire year as BLISS.
The brand is about to hit shelves in high-end boutiques, and in the spring, Anthropologie will begin selling the bags online.
Gul says the ultimate measure of success is the women who inspired her in the first place. Popinjay now employs 150 women who earn $2.50-$3 per hour, two to three times what they were making at BLISS. They work three hours a day, but still earn half of what their husbands do working full time.
Gul didn't set out to build a retail brand, but she says, "now, I not only want to help the women, I want to create a brand that represents the values of justice and equality and opportunity for underprivileged artisans. I need a successful brand to help them."In the early hours of Saturday morning, the Senate passed a sweeping tax overhaul bill in largely party-line vote.
Just one Republican, Tennessee Senator Bob Corker, voted against it on deficit concerns. The Congressional Budget Office estimated the bill would cost $1.47 trillion over a decade. Many Republicans continue to say the bill will pay for itself

Fusion wear and its growing popularity in India

Indian-Fashion-Design
The emergence of fusion wear has revolutionised the Indian fashion industry. Women, today want contemporary styles and vintage charm to blend and thus the Indo-western wear is fast catching up. An overview on the dynamics of this category.Sometimes it is lovely simply sitting on the fence. You not only save the trouble of offending someone but you also get to observe and enjoy the best of both sides. You may be wondering why we are discussing this in a fashion article but the topic calls for it.
Fusion wear – a mix of Indian and western wear celebrates the beauty of both the worlds. The emergence of fusion wear has revolutionised the Indian fashion industry to such an extent that top notch brands today have an element of the same in their collection, though we still have a long way to go if we consider the market potential for fusion wear in India. We take a quick look at the dynamics of this category in India.
So, let’s begin by looking at what is fusion wear? Anything that amalgamates Indian and western wear – so it could be something as simple as wearing a spaghetti top with a Kashmiri stole and Rajasthani print skirt! Fusion wear leaves ample room for getting as creative as one can be with their choice of clothes. It allows the person to break away from the shackles of set clothing norms and mix and match the top and bottom and if getting it customised even Reiterating the growing popularity of fusion wear, Director,  Balaji  Retail for brand  shared, “The shift from traditional ethnic wear to Indo-western is increasingly becoming the order of the day.”
Elaborating on what truly constitutes fusion wear, he explained, “The traditional salwar kameez has long or short sleeves. An Indo-western design might forego sleeves altogether, or replaces the sleeves with spaghetti straps, resembling the style of a tank top or halter. There are also poncho-styled tops and one-sleeve designs that follow contemporary western trends. Indo-western kurtas and salwars tend to be much shorter than those traditionally worn, so that they resemble western-style blouses. Some Indo-western tops are available with plunging necklines, in contrast to the traditional styling of salwars and kurtas. Fusion that Indo-western clothing represents includes wearing jeans with a choli, salwar or kurta, adding a dupatta to a western-style outfit, and wearing a lehenga (long skirt) with a tank top or halter-top. For men Indian traditional kurta with sports shoes and scarves.”
Tracing the growing emergence of fusion wear
Tracing back the origin of fusion wear to the time when we were under the British rule, Chief MD,  (Shree),  explained, “As per history with western colonial invasion in India, the change in social arena affected Indian women’s lifestyle and that influenced their fashion sense as well. Today, Indian women have adapted to changes in society and we have a huge population of working women as against times when women were usually home bound. These changes together have led to an evolution of fashion to suit their changing needs. Influence of western elements in Indian ethnic wear is vivid in a woman’s wardrobe today.”
To take Kapoor’s point a bit further, it isn’t uncommon to see ethnic prints like kalamkari, bagru, ikkat, etc., being used beautifully to create western outfits like long gowns, smart tops, etc. In fact, women today are seen to opt for traditional prints and have the fabric stitched to suit their western outfit needs.
Director,  makes an interesting statement saying that fusion wear is an apt choice to make one stand out in the crowd. “To be in vogue is to go Indo-western! Everyone wants to stand out from the crowd and fusion style suits the purpose perfectly,” he said.
While Panchal added, “The major segments in women’s wear include sarees, salwar kameez, innerwear, winter wear, sleepwear, tops, shirts, trousers, skirts, denim, t-shirts, etc. However, apart from the distinctive segments, another major category is ‘fusion wear’ or the Indo-western wear. The segment primarily stands as an amalgamation of ethnic and western style to offer an innovative solution to the changing fashion taste of Indian women. This genre basically refers to silhouettes that are inspired by western fashion trends and patterns and yet rely heavily on Indian fashion sensibilities in terms of prints, fabrics and overall styling. Catering mostly to young, fashion conscious, free spirited women between 22 to 32 years, fusion wear is a critical market where brands need to balance the fusion of ethnicity and western influences and yet provide exclusivity to customers in terms of design. While the domestic front looks highly promising, the fusion wear segment is also gaining popularity overseas.”
Director, Pret  Fashions (),  attributed the growing popularity of fusion wear to the need to looking good without compromising on the comfort factor. She shared, “For the women of today, apart from looking good comfort is also another key factor. They want today’s style and vintage charm to blend and thus the Indo-western wear is fast catching up. A classic example is gown saree, which is a hot selling cake only for its traditional value wrapped in modernity.”
Leading the race
Let us take a look at the leading lines of fusion wear being offered by the brands. According to Kapoor, the most popular fusion wear ensembles that are best selling today are maxi dress, kurta with trousers, palazzos, capes, dhoti with kurtis, etc.
According to Gupta, “Some of the fusion styles that are making the rounds in the fashion industry are draping saree with an off-shoulder blouse, pairing a flared palazzo or dhoti pants with an embellished crop top, lehenga in a jacket style and wearing a kurti as a dress.”
He further said, “Tassels and capes are turning lot of heads this season. Along with that, crop top lehengas are another newer version that we see having a good demand at Kalki.”
Crop top lehengas are basically a modern version of the traditional lehenga choli.
At Ethnicity, the fusion wear that is doing well includes long maxi with collar (thread embroidery)and hanky hem, cold shoulder maxi, skirt, crop top, heavy duty cape, etc. Panchal shared his observation on other brands and said, “From the portfolio of Global Desi, tunics, maxis, halter tops with embroidery, sleeveless long spaghetti kurta are doing well. While at Biba long kurtas with front open, flared long maxi with paisley motif, cape, etc., are in great demand.”
The way ahead
Where we do have brands offering a mix and match concept, it still remains to be seen which brand will take a lead in offering a complete range of fusion wear. So far, we see brands offering a mix of both. So we would have an ethnic wear brand like Biba offering smart tops and Fabindia offering western wear with a touch of Indian ethnic fabrics. But we are yet to see a brand with a complete portfolio of fusion wear. Going by the dynamics of fashion as seen today, fusion wear has made deep inroads in our wardrobes. And yes, this applies to men as well. It is not uncommon to see men sporting rugged pair of jeans with an ethnic kurta and mojris as their preferred footwear option!
Panchal concluded, “The fusion wear segment is showing fast forward growth. With only a handful of branded players in this space, stakeholders see a huge potential ahead. Fusion wear is seen as fashionable, bold yet not too western, which matches the sensibilities of India women.”

A designer for all seasons

Bagdoom does not just sell lifestyle productsBe

Varsha-Rao-Dec-2-2017
irl was introduced to sketching. Her mother played the sitar, and her father played the flute. This young girl herself dabbled in classical Odissi dance, Hindustani classical music and more. Gradually, her love for arts transformed into a passion for fashion, and she decided to pursue it seriously. Armed with a degree in fashion design from FIDM, San Francisco, she stood at the cusp of the fashion industry, which in those days (1993), was still in its nascent stages, and according to her, "a time when designers were treated like glorified tailors."
It's 2017, and that young girl is creating waves in the fashion industry with her designs. Meet Payal Jain, one of the top-rated fashion designers in the country today. Her designs, which are a perfect mix of desi and Western styles, have been donned by celebrities like Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra. Payal's clientele also includes many hospitality and corporate firms, both here and abroad. A big fan of colours, Payal is partial to natural fabrics and loves working with cotton, silk, linen and wool.

For Payal, the fact that the fashion industry never sees a dull moment is attractive. "The volatility, the constant evolution, the adrenaline rush, the highs and lows, the larger-than-life nature of each presentation, the amazingly crazy people who make up the business, the burning passion, the inevitable growth, the reinvention each season, and the fact that it keeps me on my toes is what entices me," she says.
Excerpts from an interview:
What's your design philosophy?
For me, fashion is a way of life. It is not only the clothes you wear, but also the destinations you travel to, the cuisine you enjoy, the furnishings you choose for your home, the choice of art you collect, and also the car you drive. My creations speak a global language, yet possess a strong Indian soul. I believe my designs have a Western body and an Indian soul. My creations are subtle, minimalistic, and strongly Indian at heart, yet appeal to global citizens and speak an international and contemporary language.
My label is an extension of my personality. I work with Indian textiles and crafts and have always been passionate about creating fabrics from scratch. My deepest joy lies in being able to see what I have envisioned come alive on a weaver's loom or an embroiderer's adda. It takes a lot of time, patience, love and passion to wait and watch each collection slowly taking shape.
How has the experience of designing for the corporate world been?
I have been working with the hospitality and corporate sectors for the last two decades. Our first corporate design project was the Leela, Goa in 1995. Since then, we have designed the uniform philosophy for over 100 hotels and corporate houses. This takes as much passion and energy as high-fashion labels. However, the contrast between the two realms of design remains vast.
Fashion on the ramp can be mad, eccentric, expensive, exquisite and delicate, but the fashion philosophy for a hotel or corporate house needs to be practical, versatile, durable, cost-effective and universal for all skin tones, shapes and sizes. Also, each corporate/hotel has its unique identity and brand philosophy, which must come across as the first impression.
What's your take on the evolution of fashion in the country?
I feel blessed to have been a part of it. When I moved back from the US and started my label, fashion was a grossly misunderstood word in most people's vocabulary. There were a handful of designers like Rohit Khosla and Ritu Kumar. Most people did not understand the relevance of fashion designers. I started my atelier in Hauz Khas village for Western couture and pret-a-porter ensembles.
Most people who came there couldn't fathom why a well-structured, beautifully cut business suit in cashmere needed to cost more than an average silk salwar kameez. Working women wore only saris or salwar kameez for work, and western womenswear market was practically non-existent here. Today, thanks to the Internet and globalisation, Indian women have moved from saris and salwars to ball gowns and business suits. The evolution of Indian women's fashion aesthetics has been mind-boggling.
Do you believe Indian textiles are finally getting their due?
I feel we have made a beginning as far as promoting Indian textiles and crafts are concerned, but there is a long journey ahead. A lot of sustained work and commitment is required from everyone related to the fashion and textile industry for the lives of weavers and artisans across India to really begin to change. I am happy to see the government creating many new initiatives to promote textiles, and I sincerely hope this movement will build momentum and take the world by storm. We are blessed to have such a rich and varied heritage of textiles, where each state has something unique to offer from weaves to embroideries and prints. it simple, casual or luxurious; trendy, unique or traditional presents you all. Daily lives, occasions, needs and necessities, celebrations, desires and wish lists – Bagdoom checks it all off. We believe life is not made up of days but each day is a realm of life, where every second is a different color and every color represents! Our prime focus is the youth, referred colloquially as the  generation” and we are here to be a part of their lives, not just by selling the brands which rest under their hood but also by writing a part of their daily life s that little spark of fun springing out of a droning afternoon, that unconscious twist of hair made while losing yourself in thoughts of wonderland, rocking the floor with confidence being no one but yourself or the three sips of tea turning into a moment of a lifetime with the right people – it is well present a one-stop lifestyle platform, holding products of various local and international brands together.
